When a baby boy was born to Spartan parents the father would take the baby to a council of elders, who would look over the child for any birth defects. If the council found the baby to be in quality condition to become a Spartan the baby was given back to his parents for six more years. At age seven the boy would be taken from his home and placed into a military training facility. At age twelve the boy would be removed from the military training facility and given nothing for one year, forcing him to learn how to survive on basic human instinct. From the ages of thirteen to twenty, when the Spartan would begin fighting, the child would play serious war "games" in preparation for the battles he would encounter in his future.

Why was it necessary for the Spartans to always be prepared for conflict?

The Spartans prioritized constant preparedness for conflict due to their militaristic society and the ongoing threat from neighboring city-states, particularly Athens and the helot population they subjugated. Their rigorous training and discipline, exemplified through the agoge system, ensured that every citizen was a skilled warrior ready to defend their territory and maintain control over the helots. Additionally, being perpetually ready for battle helped uphold their societal values and instilled a sense of unity and purpose among Spartan citizens. This relentless focus on military readiness was crucial for their survival and dominance in the ancient Greek world.

How did Spartans keep the helots under control?

Spartans maintained control over the helots, who were essentially serfs bound to the land, through a combination of fear, violence, and systematic oppression. They employed a brutal regime of surveillance and intimidation, including the annual declaration of war against the helots, which justified acts of violence against them. Additionally, Spartans conducted regular secretive killings of helots deemed a threat, known as the Krypteia, to instill fear and prevent rebellion. This oppressive system ensured that the helots remained submissive and prevented them from rising against their Spartan overlords.
