Yes, many did. Anna Bertram (Kentucky variant spelling) wrote a pamphlet detailing the history of 39 different Butrum's who fought in the Civil War. Included in this list is my great-great grandfather, John Jackson Butrum. Living on both sides of the divide, they fought on both sides. My family left Tennessee and fought on the Union side. Their cousins in Kentucky crossed the border and fought on the side of the Confederacy.
Butrum, Butram, Bertram, Buttrum, Buttram, Berttram are mostly all of the same family with a few in the US coming late from the Alsace-Loraine area, unrelated.
Our family has been here much longer, having landed in St. Mary's, MD in 1637.
