The modern assembly line was introduced, if not actually invented, by Henry Ford. It unquestionably enabled the U.S war effort to mass-produce fighting machinery.

As correctly stated above, America didnt "win" either of the world wars. Both were won by a collection of allied countries working together, which in both wars included Great Britain, Russia, France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many, many other countries. Although my knowledge of US industry is fairly limited, I do however feel quite confident in saying that US industrial might (sheer size of US economy and work force in other words) combined with innovative industrial processes (such as assembly line systems) did play a crucial role in both wars. Taking WW2 as an example, whilst true that the US did remain out of the actual fighting for some time, the US wasnt sitting idly twiddling its thumbs. From early on in WW2 the US gradually 'wound up' its industrial sector to provide Great Britain and the USSR in particular with essential goods that allowed both nations to continue to fight/survive the onslaught of Axis powers until such a time that the US could assist in mounting actual operations. In terms of naval production, during WW2 the US was able to manufacture ships on a scale that we can only dream about now. This was achieved by using an assembly line system whereby ships were built in modules by many different yards and 'sewn' together in the final stage. Whole aircraft carriers(which nowadays can take years to build) could be built in amatter of weeks. I know this doesnt answer the WW1 question but I feel sure that the US contribution to WW1 was on similar lines to that of WW2. ___ America didn't win WW1 or WW2 for that matter. The Allied Forces did win however and America although joing the fight late (both times) was only part of it. Assembly lines helped production of munitions on both sides. ____ Bear in mind that most of the other major combattants, such as Germany and Britain, had highly developed economies and sophisticated production techniques, especially in the armaments industry. It was definitely not a matter of American assembly lines versus small European workshops.
