Yes. Phil Sheridan may have been a nasty individual, but he was a highly effective commander, specially selected by Grant for service under him in the Eastern theatre.

After clearing the Shenandoah Valley of Confederates, he came down to Petersburg for the last weeks of the war, hanging on Lee's left flank, and forcing him to head West towards nowhere much.

He quarrelled bitterly with General Warren in the last days, and fired him for inefficiency, though it seems to have been more for personal insolence. Warren's reputation was not restored for many years.
