How many combat jumps occurred in Vietnam?

i did a report a long time ago in school and researched this information. On average there were only about 35,000 combat soldiers in Vietnam, on the average. Which made up only about 10% of the total American soldiers in Vietnam. It takes alot of support personnel to take care of the logistics, administrative needs, and etc... for each combat soldier. The number of combat soldiers in Vietnam rose to approximately 50,000 combat soldiers during the Tet Offensive.

What was the nickname of the 101st airborne soldiers?

Paratroopers. No. Paratroopers are the name for airborne soldiers of any country who descend by parachute. American airborne regiments probably have their own lesser-known nicknames, and perhaps they can be obtained by researching each regiment individually. I can recall only one offhand. The 555th in World War 2 was nicknamed "the Poor Old 555th" because they were held out of combat throughout the war, and the only action they saw was extinguishing forest fires caused by Japanese balloon bombs. The 555th was as good as any other American airborne regiment, but they were a black unit, and racism was a factor. I also remember that the 503rd was the regiment which recaptured the island of Corregidor on February 16, 1945. Corregidor was called the ROCK and as a result the regiment is still called the ROCK Regiment. They are currently assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy. The nickname for the 173rd is the "Sky Soldiers". This nickname was given to them by the Chinese when the 173rd was stationed in Japan and conducted all manner of training jumps into the orient. The Chinese called them "Tien Bien" meaning, "Sky Soldiers".

What World War 2 group wore the insignia of a parachute lowering a skull with batwings?

The insignia that you describe was the unit insignia of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. The 502nd, along with the 501st & the 506th were the three Parachute Infantry Regiments of the 101st Airborne Division during WW 2. Richard V. Horrell WW 2 Connections.com That insignia was used by Gus "Doc" Anagnostis for the drop zone he owned in Dickinson, Texas (halfway between Houston and Galveston. He called the club the Galveston Skydivers. He made 61 parachute jumps on his 61st birthday. He drank uzo and danced with handkercheif and could be me arm wrestling when I was 20 and in great shape. In the movie "The Longest Day" he was portrayed as a sole survivor of his group and I watched his chin quiver, just a little, when those boys were shot in the air, under parachutes off of target L.Z. I have one on my jumpsuit. It is smiling now! Gus "Doc" Anagnostis was my papoo (Grandpa). He did indeed use the insignia for his diving school. However, he made 51 jumps on his 51st birthday (not 61) - he is in the Genus Book of World Records for this. Papoo used this insignia for his school because he was in the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles. He parachuted in the night before D-Day, and he survived the Battle of the Bulge. He was truly a bad-a##. Elizabeth Anagnostis

What altitude do paratroopers drop out of planes?

Allied paratroopers made their combat jumps between 600 to 800 feet. Although this may seem rather low, keep in mind that while desending the paratrooper is defenseless. The quicker he is on the ground, the quicker he can present supressive fire which will begin to secure the DZ. Richard V. Horrell WW 2 Connections.com The prefered altitude for British Para's was 500 ft in W.W.2. Today with an improved type of parachute they drop at 250 ft.

What is an airborne combat engineer in the army?

Simply a combat engineer who is jump qualified. Although Airborne is supposed to denote someone who is actually on active jump status, a lot of these "almost Airborne" types, whose only jumps were the five jumps they did in school, flaunt their jump status and the word "Airborne" quite a bit, as well, even when serving in leg units (and even if their entire enlistment was/is served in leg units).

What plane is currently used for parachuting?

airborne units deploy by parachute. during WW2 ther were four main airborne units in the U.S. 101st airborne division, 82d airborne division, 11th airborne division and 17th airborne division. there were other smaller airborne units. at present time (I think) only one airborne division is still on jump status, the 82d airborne division. during WW2 airborne units operated in Europe and the Pacific.....there were a number of combat jumps initiated by those airborne elements during WW2, Korea and, I believe, Viet nam and Grenada

Did the ist cav div in Vietnam make any combat jumps?

Negative, the first cav was the Army's airmobility force. They were not an airborne(paratrooper) unit. I believe that the only large scale jump was made by the 101st in 1967.
