Yes they did a lot of fighting during the soviet take over of Afghanistan (may have spelled that wrong) and they helped train the vietcong leaders who took trips to Moscow. They made their biggest impact not so much in direct combat but in covert small special missions. They are much like our Green Berets or Army Rangers or Navy Seals they are a small group of special forces soldiers. This lead them to do a lot of training of other fighting groups as the CIA did in Afghanistan with the Taliban and other freedom fighters (who we are now fighting) and although they did do some fighting they were not a major force much like how our special forces are not a major force.
