1) Variety of Religions: People of the Middle East all have different religions, but mostly Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Within these there are numerous sects and groupings which vehemently dispute claims from the other sects in the same religion as well as those from other religions.
2) Jerusalem: The three major religions are tied to Jerusalem and no one wants to give up control of the city.
3) Theocracy vs. Separation of Church and State: Islam is a state religion (it states that it should be in control of the government) in the way it works, causing problems with those who think religion and state should be separate.
4) Animosity from the Crusades: There was animosity between Muslim and Christians during the Crusades (the Christians were first invaded then sent invasion forces during the middle ages) and the Jews and Muslims (Jews refused to fight with the Muslims when their territories that they occupied together were invaded.
5) Twisted Religious Dogma: People using twisted religious dogma (mostly seen today in the middle east by Muslim leaders, at least according to western media), causes even more conflicts (especially with human rights abuses and terrorist attacks, invasion forces which kill civilians and the never ending cycle)
6) Land Promises: Each religion believes that certain land was promised to them based off of their prophets and/or Gods land. Therefore, because everybody wants the land, they fight over it. Whoever wins gets the land!
7) My Religion Is Right: Many religious groups believe that their religion is the one true faith and want to eliminate or squeeze out the other faiths by not providing them both the physical and emotional space to grow or develop.
