The Texas claim is based on being a break way Republic from Mexico whose claim is based on Spanish exploration and settlement. But that was all settled effectively in the 1850 compromise. The US did uphold the Texas claim to El Paso and in the County Club border settlement, the Supreme Court also sided against New Mexico.
