Antonio López de Santa Anna joined the military at a young age, initially serving in the Spanish colonial army. He quickly rose through the ranks due to his leadership skills and military experience, particularly during conflicts such as the Mexican War of Independence. His involvement in various military campaigns and political conflicts in Mexico further solidified his position, ultimately leading him to become a prominent military and political leader in the country.
No, he went to punish the Texans for their revolt. ============================= Santa Ana's name is spelled "Ana" instead of "Anna." The vicious winds that whip through California, Arizona and Nevada in the summer and fall are named the Santa Ana winds after this president of Mexico.
A cruel, malicious person who was brutal and inhumane during time of war and failed to follow acceptable ethics. Unless they have changed the spelling of his name, it is still Santa Ana (one n). The vicious Santa Ana winds that whip out of California, through Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico at this time of year are named after Gen Santa Ana.
General Santa Anna of the Mexican Army is known for his campaign against Texan-American insurgents. Ultimately Santa Ana lost to General Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 resulting in the loss of Texas territories. In turn Texas would accede to the United States in 1845.
The battle of San Jacinto was an important battle in the Mexican American War. The surprise attack by the Americans allowed them to take Santa Ana.
Santa Ana was caught on April 22, 1836 (the day after the Battle of San Jacinto). At the beginning of the battle he had disappeared on a horse and was found in the grass dressed as a common soldier. Some people say he was dressed as a woman however this is believed to be a myth. He was brought to Sam Houston, the leader of the Texas military, who had been injured in the ankle by a musket ball. Many Texans wished to see him hanged after what he did at the Alamo and Goliad (there were no Texan survivors at these). Houston decided he should be kept alive so he could sign the Treaties at Velasco, the treaties that would give Texas freedom from Mexico. These treaties also granted Santa Anna life. Because the Texans were so hungry for revenge, Santa Ana was released in the United States. Years later, while Texas was seeking annexation to the United States, Santa Anna became the dictator of Mexico again. He attempted to take Texas back (as Mexico renounced the Treaties at Velasco) however he was unsuccessful. He died in Mexico City, June 21, 1876.
