Life on Earth is competitive in nature, and has been for the past billion years or so. It has sometimes been noted poetically that nature is red in tooth and claw. Fighting exists throughout the animal kingdom. Plants also compete with each other, but in a less obvious, vegetative manner. In terms of human history, there is no historical period in which human beings did not fight with other human beings, although some societies have been more peaceful than others. Fighting started because it is a way of resolving disagreements. Two people both want the last slice of pie. They can either come to a reasonable agreement (perhaps they could cut it in half and share equally) or they can fight about it. When people do not wish to be reasonable, they become violent. That has always been the case.
