Since the Franco-Prussian war, the countries in Europe during that period were filled with militarism. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, for example, cared about almost nothing else but having total military supremacy. He was always envious of Great Britain's large and powerful navy. Russia had large numbers and France had good artillery. When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, the rulers and citizens in Europe saw it as an opportunity to prove their country's military supremacy, especially Germany.
