One key function of concentration camps was to intimidate and terrorize opponents (and would be opponents) of the Nazi regime. They knew that if they opposed the Nazis they risked abolute hell in a concentration camp. Even was known in Germany about these camps to terrify most people thinking of opposing the regime.
