In Japan: While dropping the two atomic bombs on Japan convinced Emperor Hirohito to surrender, Japan was already in the final stages of collapse. American submarines had sunk virtually every Japanese cargo ship, so there was no food and oil imported into Japan; Navy ships such as the battleship New Jersey sailed offshore and bombarded Japanese factories, ports, and cities at will, while the U.S. Marines had beaten the Japanese soldiers in every island battle as they advanced across the pacific from Guadalcanal to Tarawa to Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.
