Germany's first tanks were captured British tanks; they simply painted German emblems on them and sent them back against their former owners.
The German pilots lacked in training and experiance. Also they lacked tactics and hant an effective strategy. On top of that, the British spitfires were the most manouvreable aircraft in the world (at the time) and had much more effective cannons/guns. And they were fast and acrobatic, far superior to any other German Aircraft.
In both World Wars, the name for the army was the British Expeditionary Force. Neither was initially very successful against the German armies. The force in 1914 was decimated, and the one in 1939-1940 had to be evacuated from Dunkirk.
