It was estimated the war would continue for another 2 years at the cost of over a million Japanese and Allied Forces lives. It was also estimated it would cost over 2 billion dollars if they had invaded. So since the atom bombs had cost the US 2 billion dollars and would kill hundreds of thousands of lives instead of over a million lives it was better to drop the bombs. The US soldiers and Marines went up to the on the two planes (that dropped the bombs) and told those men, "Thank you, you saved my life." The troops did not want to invade Japan. They knew they would die and that millions of civilians and Japanese soldiers would die before Japan would finally surrender.

Why should have they dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima?

80,000 of Hirshima's population were killed by the A-bomb blast. Allied and Japanese military leaders agreed that a million or more soldiers and civilians would have died as a result of the invasion of Japan, which was due to start about a month after the bomb was dropped. Many Japanese Navy leaders were relieved that the bomb was dropped realizing full well how many lives it actually saved in the long run.

How long ago were the atomic bombs dropped?

The only time atomic bombs were dropped in combat was in 1945.The last time either the US or USSR dropped an atomic bomb for test purposes was in 1963.When my brother was in the army in Germany doing maneuvers with nuclear antitank landmines, he dropped an atomic bomb on his hand squashing one finger like a stepped on hotdog. (of course this is a different sense of meaning of the word dropped) This was in the late 1970s.Other countries may have dropped atomic bombs for test purposes more recently.

When was the first atomic bomb dropped and why?

After the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor, the Allies bombed Japanese cities including Tokyo. In 1943, the Allies won the Battle of Midway. Shortly after joining WWII (1942) the US started a top secret project known as the Manhattan Project. Led by American scientist J. Oppenheimer, the team worked for 3 years to build an atomic bomb. After officials successfully tested the bomb, they told the Japanese to surrender, or they would face destruction. The Japanese refused to give in. On August 6, 1945, The B-29 bomber 'Enola Gay' dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. They still didn't surrender so another atomic bomb was dropped. On August 14, Japan surrendered. Long story short, the Japanese wouldn't surrender so they dropped the atomic bomb. The Japanese still didn't surrender so they dropped another atomic bomb killing more people and they finally surrendered on August 14.
