After he was captured in Scotland in 1940, he spent the rest of the war imprisoned in England. He was sent to Nuremberg after the war to join other leading Nazis, for war crimes and was convicted and served life without parole at Spandau Prison in Berlin. He died in 1987 under mysterious circumstances. He was a great pilot before the war and it was his decision alone, to fly to UK to try to negotiate a peace treaty between the British and Germany. Hitler had no idea of this and flew into a rage. Hess had been the deputy fuehrer and Hitler's personal secretary. Hitler dictated to Hess, his book,, "Mein Kampf", while both were in Prison in 1927 at Landsburg in Southern Germany. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt to a wealth German family. After his capture, Martin Borman, succeeded Hess and served Hitler till the very end of the war in the bunker in Berlin. He was killed trying to escape from the Russians.
