The USS Monitor and the USS Merrimac were both vessels in the US Navy. They did not fight. The Merrimac was sunk at the beginning of the war. The Confederate Navy took the remains of the Merrimac and used it to create the Ironclad CSS Virginia. The USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia fought a battle near Hampton Roads Virginia.
The CSS Virginia was converted into the ironclad ship from the hull of the U.S.S. Merrimack. The Virginia eventually fought the USS Monitor during the civil war.

The Ironclad CSS Virginia (ex-Merrimack) , The Cumberland , The USS Congress , The USS Monitor and The USS Minnesota
USS Wisconsin
* The USS Cumberland by ramming and not by shellfire. * The USS Congress which was grounded with hot shot after it had surrendered and its crew had been removed. * The USS Minnesota had run aground trying to evade the Virginia and was left for the next morning to finish off. That never happened because the USS Monitor arrived during the night prepared to do battle. On 9 March 1862 both the Monitor and the Virginia believed they had won the battle of the ironclads. Neither fought again and the Confederate Navy remained bottled up in Norfolk for the duration. Only the Cumberland was sunk in combat with the Virginia.
