In the US, it depends on your rank and time in grade. The lowest rank starts at $1447.20 a month. Enlisted personnel also get a free place to live and in most cases their meals as well. In addition to a uniform allowance, there may be additional money for having dependants as well.

The US payed the Revo. soldiers with land. But you have to realize America's army was mostly citizens. The citizens didn't get as much as the real army though
