The Chinese had control over Vietnam, but in 939, they left and an independent Vietnam was created. In 1407, the Chinese regained control of the area. In 1427, the Chinese were driven out and another Vietnam nation was established. In 1861, the French seized control of Saigon and the rest of the south by 1867. On December 19, 1946, Vietminh forces attacked the French in Hanoi and the Indochina War--also known as the Vietminh War--began. In 1954, the Vietminh defeated the French at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, and the nation was temporarily divided into two sections, north and south.

The Peace Treaty that ensued divided the country into 2 sovereign nations: Communist North Vietnam and Democratic South Vietname supported by the west and the United States. The Viet Cong were indigenous Communist forces inside South Vietnam and began what was to become a long bloody struggle for independence. Eisenhower sent advisors to help the South Vietnamese government in the 1950's and Kennedy escalated America's involvement during his term in the early 1960's. By that time, the Viet Cong had allied itself with the regular North Vietnamese army and was supported by both the Chinese and the Soviets. The United States under Johnson, over time, deployed over 550,000 men to South Vietnam till 1968. Peace negotiations started in 1968 in Paris but lasted for years. Finally in 1973, Nixon was able to signed Peace Treaty with the Communists and brought the rest of the American troops home including POW's. The South Vietnamese leader, Key, was very oppossed to this and had wanted to continue the fight, not trusting the Communists. He proved to be right when the Communists violated the treaty and invaded South Vietnam in 1975 and occcupied the entire country. Major atrocities occurred and reeducation camps were established all over South Vietnam. Today, Vietnam is a good friend to the United States and has cooperated with the United States to search for the remains of American soldiers or those still missing.
