The Russians were experts at fighting the cold, most of their experience comes from their Siberian winters. To combat the cold the Russian soldier had many different specialized articles of clothing. The hats that the Soviets are known for called ushankas are usually made of a material called faux which is a synthetic blend of fabrics to optimize the body's heat, these also have drop down ears that can be tied under the chin. Their boots were lined with lambs fur or faux to keep their feet warm. During the worst part of winter, snipers in the mountains and such used heavy winter clothing, it was too bulky to run in so average soldiers wore their summer uniforms. Over their summer uniforms they had a heavy overcoat to protect them from the winds which were and still are a hazard of Siberia and most of Russia. All men wore special mittens that had no separate fingers but just one big glove to maximize heating the fingers, however, to pull the trigger of their guns they had a small finger hole that they could use to poke their index finger through, into a thinner material, then withdraw their finger back to the glove. I hope i answered your questions, to the extent of my knowledge its all correct, sorry for any errors.
