Knights were the lowest rung of nobility during the middle ages. They were essentially soldiers for hire, and most of them were thieves, murderers, rapists, and worse; though if they were victorious in battle, they were awarded lands, and even titles. Tournaments were not the polite, colorful jousts we imagine, but were often brutal, wholesale slaughters. The version of the chivalrous knight we have today comes from the writings of Thomas Malory; his Le Morte D'Arthur, which was written while Malory, a knight himself, was imprisoned for several of the crimes enumerated above. This romanticized version is mainly fiction.

Why did popularity of using knights in battle declineby the 1400s?

Battles like Agincourt proved that knights were not best troop you can have on battlefield, knights were often impetuous and this was not always an advantage, a standing army defending a strategic position proved to be much more effective than a cavalry charge, much more strategys to defeat heavy cavalry of knights were developed and knights were always less effective, another reasons are the expenditure on knights wages, maintenance, rewards..etc

What was the number of knights in 1066?

In 1066, the number of knights in England was relatively small compared to the total population, estimated to be around 5,000 to 10,000 knights. The feudal system was in its early stages, and knights were primarily vassals to the nobility, serving in exchange for land. Following the Norman Conquest, the number of knights increased as William the Conqueror distributed land to his followers, leading to a more structured knightly class in England.

Were knights in the royal council?

Knights were not typically part of the royal council, which was primarily composed of higher-ranking nobles, clergy, and advisors who had significant political power and land. However, some knights who were loyal and influential might have been invited to advise the king or queen on military matters or specific issues. Additionally, during certain periods, such as the late medieval era, the role of knights in governance became more prominent, particularly through institutions like the Parliament in England. Overall, while knights could influence decisions, they were generally not formal members of the royal council.
