This question is a lot more complicated than it sounds on the surface. Germany first invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. However, it was a long time before, for example, the United States became involved. Reaction to the war was generally slow and took place over a long period of time, but the event that arguably triggered all subsequent chaos was that invasion. A lot of thought could go into the date at which it became a world war, and many people would probably reference Hitler's rise to power as the point when WW2 became inevitable... but the first military aggression in the war was September 1, 1939-- and that's the only concrete date one could call the "start" of the war.
