Their elaborate tunnel systems

Generally a non-uniformed, non-formally trained, mostly non-paid soldier. Although regular Government soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors CAN be detailed the duties of guerrillas...generally guerrillas are as described in the first sentence. Although, it should be noted, that the VC were one of history's most successful guerrilla fighters.
A guerilla is a small force fighting against a larger one. Guerilla activity is rampant in that country.
The Vietnam War was mainly a ground war. Due to the nature of the terrain, heavy mechanized units were unavailable or useless to the Americans as they would get stuck in mud or would not be able to go through the thick jungle, etc. This led to the war mainly being fought by infantry. There was also a strategy of combined arms in the war. Navy and Marine patrol boats were on the rivers and in the swamps looking for Viet Cong troop movement. When the American infantry were pinned down, they often called in air support from F4 Phantoms. The US really did not have much of a chance to win this war, as so many targets were deemed off-limits by the Commander-in-Chief. For example, the US Air Force was restricted from bombing populated areas such as cities. In theory this was to prevent massive civilian casualties. However, the Viet Cong would slip out of the cities and villages, engage the Americans, and then retreat back to their homes. Waging a guerrilla war, the Viet Cong were able to blend in with ordinary villagers as well. This made it extremely difficult to differentiate between friend and foe in the war. Many American commanders expressed their frustrations with this policy, and some of them were pushed so far that they snapped, resulting in massacres of villages. The My Lai Massacre is one example... US forces entered the village, encountered no resistance, yet systematically moved throughout the village, burned all the buildings, and raped and murdered the population. Casualties here are estimated at 175-400 Vietnamese.
The victor writes the rules. So, if the victorious side writes something, unless there is some strong evidence to refute it, it is normally accepted as the truth, even if it is not true. NORMALLY figures are EXAGGERATED, especially in regards to mass numbers. When dealing with warship losses or large aircraft such as the B-52 bomber, it is easier to keep track of such things, and "normally" a person can obtain an accurate number (figure). However, to obtain information regarding S. Viet losses inflicted by the Viet Cong (VC), one would have to get that information from the current Vietnamese government, whom the (former) Viet Cong used to fight for. Then, for the sake of accuracy, the obtained information from the current Vietnamese government would have to be compared to any sources available in the US. Or, a student (historian) could research Vietnam War material, and derive casualty figures from those. Keep in mind, that "normally" US/allied forces claimed more enemy casualties than actually occurred (inflated body counts), and the enemy did the same thing. That's why historians MUST cross check the data. To find the medium or more realistic number.

They wanted to replace the Southern government with a communist one.

Seems like there was one or two each week.
on 1/31/67 the viet cong launched the Tet Offensive that would turn out to be one of the bloodiest battles of Vietnam
Good question. Must be the mis-informed people talking about the Tet Offensive of 1968. That wasn't a VC uprising...that was a communist offensive orchestrated by Hanoi and executed by the NVA; using a the VC as an additional "tool" for the attack. Tet accomplished two things: Made the US look bad & destroyed the VC as a pliable force. As projected by North Vietnam, if and when they won the war against the US/allies they would'nt have to contend with the VC afterwards. Bottom line: They were getting rid of two enemies with one stroke. The VC being projected as a future adversary when the dust settled.
There were three names by which South Vietnamese supporters of the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam War were known. One was Viet Cong. The phrase was a shortened form of the Vietnamese "Viet Nam Cong San," for Vietnamese Communist. It was first used by Ngo Dinh Diem [January 3, 1901-November 2, 1963], First President of the Republic of [South] Vietnam, to describe the opponents to his government and the supporters of the Democratic Republic of [North] Vietnam. President Diem held office from October 26, 1955, until the overthrow of his government and his assassination. But the South Vietnamese supporters didn't identify themselves as Viet Cong. Instead, they preferred recognition of their membership in, or support for, the pro-North guerrilla army and political group. For pro-Northerners joined, or supported, the People's Liberation Armed Forces aka PLAF. Or they joined, or supported, the National Front for the Liberation of Southern Vietnam aka National Liberation Front and NLF.
One challenge in cleaning up an area after a battle or firefight was estimation, since the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong soldiers often carried their dead away from the battle to prevent them from being counted.
A visit to the Royal Abbey of Cong, and a lake cruise with Corrib Cruises are just some activities you can do in Cong. You can also try to fly a hawk at Ireland's School of Falconry.

yes they did the one of the things that they used was i think a pungy stick. These were hidden in to deep holes that were covered over with leaves etc. To make things wore the ends of these sticks would be covered in scxcrement so that the victim would get a very bad infection.
