FUSAG, the First US Army Group was a ficticious formation, theoretically commanded by Patton, was designed to indicate to the Germans that the Invasion would be in the Pas de Calais. This disinformation was taken in by the German High Command, because initially they thought D Day was a diversion. The use of Air power & Naval bombardment were used to aid the invasion & the Mulberry harbours were crucial to the landings. Dieppe in 1942 had shown the Allies were unable to take a French Port intact. Op Goodwood had the aim of drawing the German Armour on to that of the British, allowing the breakout of Op Cobra, in which Patton would unleash fast US armoured spearheads into the French hinterland, destroying many German forces around Falaise. The most costly eventwas Bloody Omaha in which the US invaders were attacked effectively as they waded ashore taking heavy casualties. The bombing of bridges across rivers in France & the disruption of railway lines aided the invaders in preventing the Germans from moving reserves to Normandy.

in Op Goodwood Montgomerys' intention was to pull the German Armour on to his. Having achieved this it allowed Patton much more scope for the breakout in Op Cobra.
