The development of package holidays Thomas cook (1808-1902) is often hailed as the 'farther of travel and tourism'. Cook charge one shilling and this included the cost of the rail ticket and the food on the journey. The venture was a great success and Cook decided to start his own business running rail excursions. The enormous response promoted him to arrange an increasing number and range of excursions to destinations in the British Isles, including seaside resorts, to give people a temporary escape from the drudgery of their daily lives. In 1885, his first group ventured abroad to visit Belgium, Germany and France, with all arrangements made by him. The interest of travelling grew in the first half of the twentieth century, particularly in the UK. Harry Warner opened his first holiday camp, followed by Billy Butlin in 1936.Holidaymakers enjoyed the accommodation in basic but bright chalets, three meals a day and entertainment for an all-inclusive price. These holidays grew popular.
