Ten per cent of the US population of 160 million was in uniform for the war. This was thought to be the maximum which could be taken for military service in a modern, industrial economy without beginning to harm war production. Of this 16 million, nearly nine million served in the US Army. Another 2.7 million served in the US Army Air Force. All these were under the command of General George C. Marshall. About 3.2 million served in the US Navy, and another 700,000 served in the Navy's Marine Corps. These were under the command of Admiral Ernest King.
