US President Abraham Lincoln can be considered to be a good leader based on the fact that because of his persistence and loyalty to the concept of "unionism" he was able to keep the United States united. Many people believe, however, that he went beyond the limits of the US Constitution to accomplish this.

Well, just look at what he accomplished...he saved the union from disintegration, preserving democracy as a way of life in the US. (if the south had won the war it would have then shown that if an individual state doesnt like any particular laws of the union, it can just up and quit the union and go off on its own).

Keep in mind too that managing a civil war, a war with itself, is perhaps the most difficult thing any leader of any nation at any time could do. He did this without any support from his cabinet or party, and was often openly ridiculed for his policies. He always did what he thought was the right thing to do, despite criticism, and it turned out he was often correct in doing so.

He did what he did despite huge problems and difficulties within his own family....the death of one of his children, and the mounting mental instability of his wife.

He is recognized as the greatest president because of the tremendous problems facing the nation, despite having the most difficult set of circumstances to contend with.

Web sites about Lincoln are probably the most abundant of any topic you could pick. There have been more books written about him than any other American ever.

US President Lincoln did the best he could under very difficult situations. It's easy to look back at the war and Lincoln's performance. It's easy to criticize him. With that said, however, Lincoln knew he had no military background. He was undereducated compared to his peers and in comparison to US presidents before his time. Whenever a dominating force, which the North was, conducts a four year war that in itself has almost more casualties than all US wars combined ( almost ) then someone is not doing a good job.
