Slapton is a village in Devon, England, between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth that lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The nearby beach, known as Slapton Sands, was in 1944 the site of the ill-fated Exercise Tiger. During the Exercise, an Allied convoy was attacked by German E-boats during the night, resulting in the deaths of 749 American servicemen. The servicemen were secretly buried in nearby cemetery and their deaths was not reported to their families until after the Normandy landings.

When were the American bases set up in World War 2?

American USAAF bases were mostly in East Anglia (Norfolk & Suffolk & Cambridgeshire) in UK. The pre D day US Army bases were in Devon & Wiltshire mainly, the FUSAG (First US Army Group) nominally commanded by General Patton, was part of the deception plan used to deceive the Germans as to where the site of the invasion of France would be. And now I read the question & it says 'When' !...1942 & 1943 is the answer.

What preparation was needed for d-day landing 1944 to take place?

Exercise Tiger is a good example where nearly a thousand US GIs were lost in preparation for D-Day when a convoy was ambushed by German E boats off the Devon coast. A good book by Ken Small, The Forgotten Dead, tells of the recovery of a Sherman tank from the sea bed which is now a war memorial on Slapton Sands, South Devon. Another feature was the disinformation of FUSAG, the mythical First US Army Group, nominally commanded by Patton, which didn't exist.

Why did the evacuees leave home?

Because nobody was expected to drop bombs on the countryside. From the beginning iof the war, it was expected that Germany would bomb all major cities. The whole country was zoned according to its presumed danger; so London was a place of danger, and children could be sent out for their protection; Devon was a place opf safety, so households could be made to accomodate childre. This led to one or two curious anomalies. In one North-Eastern area, a port city was directly next to a holiday resort. The city was a place of danger, the resort one of safety. One street ran along the boundary, and in theory a child could be evacuated from one side of the street to the other.
