The Spanish Canary Islands, although of great interest to Germany and Allied powers, were eventually left alone on behalf of SpainÕs neutrality. Originally, Adolph Hitler had wanted to capture the Islands for Germany but realized it did not have the naval strength to hold the hold the Canaries. Britain had been prepared to fight for the Canary Islands if Spain had attacked Gibraltar. In addition the invasion of the Soviet Union diverted attention from the Islands capture.
