The number one thing to know and remember about ANY US pilot during the Vietnam War; they volunteered! If they didn't like to be a PILOT there was an alternative...they could live in the mud with the rest of the GRUNTS!
Airmen (pilots/aircrewmen) knew this. For the most part, if they complained, they kept it professional (to themselves)...they knew there were men on the ground who had been drafted, didn't like it, but were doing it (sleeping in mud/eating cold canned food, and getting shot at), and had it FAR WORSE than a pilot or aircrewmen sleeping warm & clean in his bunk at base.
If there were any court martials, or airmen who refused to bomb an enemy target, they certainly weren't advertised. Again, for the most part, most, if not all US airmen did a fine job bombing and strafing enemy targets for the men on the ground.
There were on a few occasions some rotor-wing airmen (helicopter) that really asked alot of questions (are you still receiving fire? Are you sure? what kind of fire? How close are they?) before they lowered their altitude; they most probably had been shot up pretty good in the past, and didn't want to repeat any of those experiences. But it took alot of profanity and verbal threats (some GI's verbally stated they were going to shoot down that bird, if he didn't come in) to get some of those pilots to fly in an extract wounded men.
Not counting helicoper pilots and aircrewmen; over 6,000 Fixed-wing/propeller/jet US pilots and aircrewmen were killed or missing during the Vietnam War.
Nearly 12,000 US helicopters & approximately 40,000 US helicopter pilots served in the Vietnam War. Over 5,000 US helicopters were destroyed and nearly 5,000 US helicopter crewmen were killed in Vietnam. Of those 5000 dead crewmen, about 2,000 were helicopter pilots.

Only 3 US MARINE aviators were confirmed to have aerial kills during the Vietnam War; all three airmen flew the F4 Phantom, with USAF, USN backseaters: 1. CPT Doyle D. Baker (one MIG17) 2. CPT Lawrence G. Richard (one MIG21) 3. MAJ Lee T. Lasseter (one MIG21)

US Pilots fought in the skies over North Vietnam. In the south, GI's fought in the swamps in the Mekong Delta; the mountains in the Central Highlands.
