Five empires went in to WWI, and only one emerged at the end - the British Empire. The Hapsburg Empire was hundreds of years old, but had been styled the "Dual Monarchy" of Austria-Hungary since 1867. The Empire was dissolved, the dynasty deposed, and the new independent nations of Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Albania, and parts of others came into existence. The German Empire lost its dynasty, the Hohenzollerns, who were replaced by a republic, and also lost all overseas colonies. The Romanov dynasty of Russia, after several centuries, did not even survive until the war ended, and Russia became the Soviet Union, shorn of much land on its western end, Poland, the Baltic Republics of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and parts of others. The Ottoman Empire tottered along for a couple of years after the war ended but then the last Sultan, Abdul the Damned, rode the wreckage down into a cloud of dust. This collapse, after nearly four hundred years, combined with the death of the last Caliph in 1912, is what has produced so much of the unrest in the Middle East for the last century. Everything from Arabia to Iraq to Turkey now emerged as nations, some of which had not operated as independent nations for many centuries, if ever.

After World War I, the map of Europe drastically changed. Both the Ottoman Empire as well as Austria-Hungary no longer existed. However, a new country appeared after the war as well, Yugoslavia, known as the Kingdom of Serbs, became an independent country after World War I.

Many European countries ceased to exist as independent States, as the Soviet Union had conquered them. Germany was split in two (one half Capitalist, the other Communist), and this change became permanent until the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the USSR collapsed.

Who were Britan fighting against in World War 2?

The Britons fought against the axis powers in both the Pacific Theater of Operations and the European Theater of Operations. This means they fought against the big 3 axis powers of Japan, Germany and Italy. There were smaller nations they had to battle as well, such as African nations and the French Vichy. They "owned" many other nations and islands as an imperialist nation which Japan and Germany attacked or took over. Conflicts between the Brits and Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Egypt and other Arabian nations did exist during World War 2. Some of these conflicts and issue resulted in the 1948 war in Israel. The primary enemy however was Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Germans. They poured the bulk of their money, supplies, war equipment and men into their effort to defeat and destroy Nazism. The Allied Forces all put the most effort into the European War. The Pacific Theater took a back seat but they did defeat the Japanese with the thinner budget and allotment of men and equipment.
