The Empire was dissolved, the dynasty deposed, and the new independent nations of Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Albania, and parts of others came into existence. The German Empire lost its dynasty, the Hohenzollerns, who were replaced by a republic, and also lost all overseas colonies. The Romanov dynasty of Russia, after several centuries, did not even survive until the war ended, and Russia became the Soviet Union, shorn of much land on its western end, Poland, the Baltic Republics of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and parts of others. The Ottoman Empire tottered along for a couple of years after the war ended but then the last Sultan, Abdul the Damned, rode the wreckage down into a cloud of dust. This collapse, after nearly four hundred years, combined with the death of the last Caliph in 1912, is what has produced so much of the unrest in the Middle East for the last century. Everything from Arabia to Iraq to Turkey now emerged as nations, some of which had not operated as independent nations for many centuries, if ever.
