Soldiers often dug trenches for cover and shelter, particularly during World War I, where they provided protection from enemy fire and harsh weather conditions. These trenches allowed troops to establish defensive positions while minimizing exposure to attacks. Additionally, in various conflicts, soldiers have also created foxholes, which are smaller, individual shelters dug in the ground for protection against incoming fire.
A dugout was a trench that was dug and roofed over as a shelter for troops.

Trench / Bunker
Soldiers dug trenches to be below ground level. If they were shot at, the trench provided cover to hide in. Larger trenched areas were constructed to impede the progress of advancing vehicles, like troop carriers, trucks and early tanks. They were also ideal places to hide in and wait for the opposing army to arrive, and then ambush them from a protected place, while the enemy had no cover to hide in.
Soldiers stayed in dug outs. They were dug out of the sides of the trenches,(hence the name) they went down to almost 10 feet sometimes. Usually they were where soldiers slept, waited, and took refuge from artillery/mortars. Some of them had gas curtains, but it was not uncommon to have a full dug out gassed because of the remnants of a gas raid on a soldier's clothes/boots. Which the gas curtain prevented from escaping.

I have just finished a project for school in which i had to make a trench so i can answer confidently. i hope lol :s a dugout is an area were soldiers could retire-a simple shelter built/dug into the side of the trench. it gave some protection, but was mainly designed as a place to sleep under cover. Officers and other higher ranked army officials would have larger, more bunker like dug outs, some fitted with bunk beds to provide better sleeping qualities. please, anyone, correct me if i am wrong.

The soldiers themselves dug out the trenches.
To protect the soldiers! If you couldn't be seen and were below the top of the trench, you couldn't be shot. They started out as birms and foxholes and then they were connected so that the soldiers didn't have to expose themselves to the enemy to get to other locations.
