The USN lost one large fleet carrier, the USS Lexington; plus the destroyer Sims and one oiler. The IJN lost one light carrier. The Coral Sea was history's first clash of carriers, and the carriers were called flat-tops by US airmen. A USN dive bomber pilot transmitted this famous signal to his headquarters after sinking the IJN light carrier. "Scratch one flat-top!"
