They drove off the Japanese from attacking a country on the coral sea
Battle of Coral Sea, 7-8 May 1942; Japanese tactical victory, however it was a major US strategic victory Battle of Midway, 4 June 1942; decisive US tactical & strategic victory
It was the first naval battle fought exclusively with airplanes. The Battle of the Coral Sea was a tactical win for the Imperial Japanese Navy and a strategic win for the US Navy.
The Battle of the Coral Sea is regarded as a tactical victory for the Japanese and a strategic victory for the US. It was a tactical victory for Japan because the US lost one of its very few large fleet aircraft carriers, and had another damaged, while the Japanese lost only one light carrier. It was a strategic victory for the US because it caused the Japanese to abandon their plan to land and capture Port Moresby, New Guinea, from whence they could interrupt sea lanes to Australia, and perhaps mount an invasion of Australia. After the Battle the invasion fleet sailing several hundred miles behind the Japanese battle fleet turned around. This was the first time the Japanese had been turned back from a planned conquest. It was also the first battle at sea ever in which the opposing fleets never caught sight of one another, with all the blows struck by airplanes (or submarines operating on their own). The Battle of the Coral Sea also set the stage for the Battle of Midway the following month.
The most notable part of the Battle of Coral Sea was that the ships involved never saw each other. The entire battle was conducted by aircraft off of carriers. The US lost the USS Lexington, the Japanese lost a small carrier. While in terms of material loss, the US came off the worst, but tactically it stopped the Japanese attempt to invade New Guinea. A month later that Battle of Midway took place and was the turning point of the War in the Pacific.
The war in the Pacific was a NAVAL WAR. Land battle victories were irrelevant. A victorious army holding an island could be starved into NO ARMY AT ALL without control of the sea to re-supply it. SOME of the key naval battles in the pacific were: The Battle of the Java Sea, The Battle of the Coral Sea (Japanese tactical victory/US strategical victory), Battle of Savo Island, Sea Battles off of Guadalcanal, Battle of Midway, Battle of the Philippine Sea, Battle of Leyte Gulf (history's largest naval battle), and the battle between the British battleship & battlecruiser, HMS Prince of Wale & HMS Repulse, both of which were sunk by Japanese Army twin engine bomber/torpedo airplanes.

The Battle of the Coral Sea was a Japanese tactical victory; they sank the US Navy's largest aircraft carrier, the USS Lexington. The Battle of the Coral Sea was a US strategic victory; because the Japanese turned around, and headed away from Australia.
