The Trench Warfare had terrible coditions. This includes muddy trenches from the rain of Europe that resulted into Trenchfeet (terrible images of deformed black toes that will be amputated). The rats fed on the dead bodies of men. Conditions were suprising in World War I because more modern weapons were introduced such as tanks, flamethrowers and poisonous gas (which was later banned). A great way to read about the conditions of these men in a first-person-point-of-view is "All Quiet in the Western Front" by Erich Remarque.
