Perhaps by appeasing the Southern desire to admit Texas without a trade off in terms of Free vs Slave state numbers the break up of the country could have been delayed. Polk resisted, continued negotiations with England for the Oregon Territory, fought Mexico and obtained Texas, Mew Mexico and California at bargain basement prices. The Civil War was probably inevitable.
