Answer The US did not enter WW2 with the purpose of acquiring land---unlike most countries who go to war. The US and the other Allies maintained military control of some of the countries until order and a government could be restored. I can not think of any land, island or body of water that the US acquired as a result of WW2.
Other countries around the world either picked up capitalism or communism. The cold war spread because Russia wanted more control in more satellite states and countries, and the US had to keep an eye on them as well as keep them in check.
