On the Allied side it was Great Britain, the USA, all the nations of the British Empire including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the West Indies, Cyprus, India and the others, the USSR, Greece, Bolivia, Brazil, Korea, and the exiled Governments and resistance movements of most of the Nazi or Japanese-occupied nations. These latter included France, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Holland, Norway, Denmark, Yugoslavia and most Middle Eastern countries. Also Mongolia. All African states were also on the side of the Allies due to Hitler's racist extermination policies, and most of South America was either neutral or sympathetic to the Allies with the exception of Paraguay, which was a Nazi sympathiser. The Axis powers were principally Germany, Austria, Italy and Japan, but Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Croatia (then not a part of Yugoslavia) were actively on the Nazi side as well. Thailand was allied to Japan. Spain was a supporter of Hitler under the rule of General Franco, but did not have the financial resources to actively join the Axis following the Spanish Civil War. All other nations remained officially neutral, with most being tacit supporters of the Allies and suppliers of fuel and other resources to the Allied nations, but some, such as Finland, were close Nazi sympathisers. The most successfully neutral European countries were Switzerland, Sweden and Ireland, although many Irishmen went to Britain to fight with the British against Hitler, and there was some sympathy for the Nazis within the IRA.
