Well to be brutally honest, not one single thing. When you check the historical record you will find that Lincoln was a member of the "Back to Africa" movement which sought to have all slaves sent back to their "home country". He was also not a proponent of equal rights for blacks, though he did feel they could be treated better. In fact he is on record in his debates with Stephen Douglas as saying "If I could save the union without freeing one slave, I would." He is also on record in those same debates as saying "I do not hold that the Negro is the equal of the white man." And in his first Innaugural address March 4, 1861, he said: "I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so." So Lincoln is not a real leader in human rights advancement

Hold on a minute, this answer is terrible. Lincoln made those comments you reference to appease southerners and oppose war. In reality, you captured a moment in time when he was pandering, trying to reassure southern radicals so that they would not go to war over his election. To understand the context of those statements you need to read the Lincoln Douglas debates in their entirety, not just a few comments or qoutes pages. You also need to understand the era in which those comments were made. Lincoln's views on slavery and equality were considered radical for the time, and to get elected he had to moderate. I find your statement that he was not a leader for human rights incredibly unfair, and also completely inaccurate. The southerners of the day thought Lincoln was a great threat to the institution of slavery and felt strongly enough about it that they left the union before he could even be inaugurated, despite him making these comments.
