A Dugout is an underground shelter to protect soldiers from enemy fire. They ranged from small open scoops out of the walls of a trench to large wood and concrete protected multi-layered underground constructions.
They tended to permit soldiers to sleep/eat and rest more safely. They could also be offices for officers, dressing stations for the wounded, supplies and stores.
