The First Cavalry Division arrived in Vietnam in the fall of 1965 in the central highlands as the world's first "Airmobile" Division. They used the traditional cavalry rapid attack tactics but with helicopters instead of horses.

After working to block communist infiltatation in the the central highlands through 1966-67, they were moved up to the northernmost provinces of South Vietnam in January, 1968. There they assisted in the liberation of the occupied city of Hue during the February '68 TET offensive, then on to Khe Sanh to stop the beseiged Marines there in April '68. By the end of 1968, they were moved along the Cambodia border to block incursion routes to Saigon there. That included operations that crossed the border into Cambodia to destroy North Vietnamese supply points at the south end of the Ho Chi Minh trail.

The Cav left Vietnam by brigades 1971-73, and was reassigned to Fort Hood, Texas.
