My grandfather was in the 38th. They built airstrips early in the war; on Ascension Island in the Atlantic to support the campaign in Africa and in Africa to support the campaign in Italy. They were in D-Day, Utah Beach.
My dad (mhrip) served in the 38th from his graduation of basic training. I even have some pictures in Africa when he served there if you are interested. Some of them have military approval on the back because it was a huge secret at the time. Their arrival on the beaches wasn't the first day of the invasion they were still in Africa. Till the day he died my dad hated and wouldn't eat chocolate because that was the main ration during the battle of the bulge which the 38th participated in. I'm providing a link to Ascension Island and the 38th it is a beautifully written 25 page piece by the author.
ASCENSION ISLAND AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR
If you have any questions I'll try my best to answer them my dad (mhrip) spoke about his unit a lot the last couple of years before he passed away. There was even a chance of someone doing a historical television piece they interviewed my dad but lacked funding. There was a very good chance your grandfather and my dad knew each other he was a musician (Saxophone) and a boxer. There were also many yearly reunions some of which I attended as a youngster. Around a year ago I spoke to a person from his unit and let my dad and him chat I didn't listen even for a second.
There is also another woman looking for funding for a 38th documentary but her dad stayed on the island as an officer your grandfather and my dad built the world's second largest airstrip as of today in a mere 90 days.
The 25 page piece on Ascension Island it will fill in some missing answers for you.
Some great pics did your grandfather ever speak to you about the birds that lived on the island.
YouTube interview with Bill Moore I actually spoke to him less than two years ago for well over an hour probably closer to 2.
I have around a dozen pictures of the 38th on Africa they could be posted if you wish. One actually shows a woman from the Congo breast feeding her infant. Considering this was from the 1940's I'm kind of shocked it passed through the censors.
Don't let the story of your grandfather die keep on talking about it. Only in the past few years has the 38th been recognized like they should of over seventy years ago.
Your grandfather was a true HERO.
They won't let me post the links as an answer I will try to do a workaround as soon as this is finsihed.

After being sent to the pacific theatre, the unit found itself engaged in combat in the Philippines where it served honorably and won the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. It was on the Philippines where the 163d Field Artillery helped the 38th Infantry Division earn its nicknames, the" Avengers of Battaan" and the Cyclone Division. It was at this time the former elements were reorganized and redesignated as the 163d Field Artillery, a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System, to consist of the 1st Battalion, and element of the 38th Infantry Division.
