In colonial New England shortly before the American War of Independence, a portion of the Militia held themselves ready to respond to gather and serve at a minute's notice. Today we would say they were on "ready alert" but in those days they were simply called "Minute Men."

In the 1960s, one of the US ICBM missile systems was called the Minuteman. A subsequent version is still in active service under that name.
