The Civil War had a totally different economic effect on the North and the South. Most of the battles occurred in the South. In addition, Union forces destroyed railroads, factories, forges, telegraph wires, bridges, dams, houses, barns and other structures. The North including the border states experienced few battles. The rail road track width was standardized so a railroad car could go on any track. Factory sizes were standardized. Factories were built to produce war supplies. In 1861 Union Forces captured New Orleans. Southern farmers could no longer send their cotton to England. They still shipped it to New Orleans but sold it to Northern Factories. Thus the Civil War produced a large rail road transportation system in the north and many new factories.

The south would have fewer roads, railroads, and a greater dependance on boats for transportation for a number of years after the civil war. Even tho the south grew the cotton and sugar cane, the factories for processing cotton and sugar would remain in the north for many years. Only gradually did they move south near the source of their raw materials.
