Russia drew out of World War I, admitting defeat by Germany and ceded large tracts of land in Eastern Europe to Germany. Some of that land was returned by the Treaty of Versaillies, in which Germany surrendered to the remaining Allied Forces, and some was turned into other countries, most of which had existed in the past and had been taken over by Russia, like Lithuania and Finland.
