William Orlando Darby was a Major in the Army in 1942. Darby later received career promotions bringing him to the rank of Colonel (1944). Darby took over command as Assistant Division Commander of the 10th Infantry Mounted Division from a wounded Brigadier General Robinson E. Duff. On April 30, 1945 near Lake Garda in Torbole, Italy, Darby was killed when a German 88mm artillery shell exploded near him while planning an attack on Trenton. It is sad to say that only 2 days later, all German Field Command forces surrendered in Italy. William O. Darby was promoted posthumously (after death) to Brigadier General on May 15, 1945.
