Generally, a common soldier could expect to earn between 10 to 20 shillings per month, while more skilled soldiers or officers received higher pay. Additionally, soldiers often faced delays in receiving their wages and supplemented their income through looting or other means during campaigns. Overall, military pay during this period was generally low and unreliable.
During the Renaissance, a soldier's life was often challenging and perilous, characterized by long periods of training, harsh conditions, and the constant threat of battle. Soldiers typically served in mercenary companies or as part of a feudal lord's retinue, receiving pay but facing unpredictable job security. Warfare was brutal and marked by close combat, with weapons like pikes, swords, and early firearms, while tactics evolved with the introduction of gunpowder. Aside from combat, soldiers had to contend with disease, inadequate supplies, and the often harsh treatment from their commanders.

The Army does not pay anyone's rent. However, provided your spouse entered the proper paperwork, as his dependent, you should receive dependent's pay, a stipend that is paid in addition to his base pay. It won't be much, but something is better than nothing, and as his rank increases, so does the amount received. If you enlist in to the Army as being Married, then you are entitled to receive Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for the location of the spouse, which typically covers the rent and some of the utilities for that area. BAH is automatic as long as during the enlistment process a marriage certificate and spouses information as been entered in the enlistment packet. You can do a search for BAH rates by zip code online. For single soldiers, the Army is not going to pay rent nor is that soldier authorized BAH since they will be receiving free housing while serving in the Army.
Pay is dependent upon rank/pay grade, time in service, and any other allowances the soldier is entitled to.
