Tec 5 was a rank, and the 747th Tank Battalion was the unit the soldier served with.

Tec 5 was a rank for men with technical training, like radio operators, mechanics and so on. The pay grade was the same as for a buck sergeant. The badge of rank was three chevrons (just like a buck sergeant) but with a capital "T" below.

The 747th Tank Battalion was one of several dozen US "independent" tank battalions. They were independent because they were not a permanent part of any larger formation, such as a division. These were tank units created in addition to the 16 armored divisions the US fielded during the war. In the days just before the war no one knew exactly how tanks should be used. The debate was, should tanks be massed in large formations, such as armored divisions, and used for breakthroughs and exploitation, or should they be distributed among the infantry units to support the foot soldiers? In the end, the US decided to do both, with armored divisions for breakthrough and exploitation and "independent" battalions for infantry support. These independent battalions were under the control of a higher HQ than a division - a Corps or an Army, and were "attached" usually to an infantry division to support its operations. The idea was that these battalions could be moved around as needed, but in practice many of these "attachments" were more or less permanent.

These independent battalions usually only had a few hundred men, so tracking their history is not always easy. See links below for some history.

What does this mean btry a 796 AAA bn cac ww11?

The phrase "btry a 796 AAA bn cac ww11" refers to "Battery A, 796th Anti-Aircraft Battalion, Coast Artillery Corps, World War II." It indicates a specific military unit that was part of the U.S. Army during World War II, focusing on anti-aircraft operations to protect against enemy aircraft. The "btry" stands for battery, "bn" for battalion, and "cac" denotes the Coast Artillery Corps, which was responsible for coastal defense.

Where can you get information on the 80th Chemical Mortar BN in World War 2?

Infantrymen absolutely LOVED to have these Chemical Mortars where they could call of them for fire. Their weapon was a 4.2 inch (107mm) mortar, which could fire not only gas shells, but smoke, incendiary and what the infantry loved, high-explosive shells. Very effective against stationary targets. The guys in these mortar battalions were often called "four-deucers" because of the 4.2 inch size of their shells. (This is the diameter of their shells). There are a few details at http://4point2.org about the 80th Chemical Mortar Bn. There's a decent wikipedia article on Chemical Mortars but no specifics on the 80th C. M. Bn. The 80th C. M. Bn was in the Pacific, and it appears that at least Company A of the Battalion was attached for a time to the Americal Division ( which is actually the 23rd Infantry Division).
