There were quantum leaps in tonnage, altitude weapons types and accuracy. (Accuracy is and will always be a problem, friendly fire incidents were rarely and poorly reported, they still seem to be. )

In WWI planes were mainly used for scouting purposes. In WWII they were used for bombing and were extremely effective in destroying tanks. They were also used for destroying other planes and releasing paratroopers.

The principal difference is in the number of wings. By the end of WW2 the Biplane has virtually disappeared. The monoplane has become the jet engined, streamlined force that now flies supersonic.

The primary difference has been the engines. There are four pribicples that affect flight. Gravity (weight), Thrust (horsepower), lift and drag.

To make a plane carry more and go faster we need to have more horsepower verses weight. That was the true breakthrough of the Wright Brothers. They developed and engine with a weight to horsepower ratio that allowed flight. As horsepower increased and weight of engine decreased, the need for those second wings disappeared, although in WW2 there were still biplanes.

The horsepower of the average WW1 plane was under 60 horsepower. A B-17 had four 1500 horsepower engines. This is a big increase which allows for more speed and payload.

What is the difference between a world war and a Civil War?

A World War (like World War I and World War II) has a lot of the world participating (in a more friendly word) in it. A Civil War (like the Vietnamese Civil War/Vietnam War or the USA Civil war) is when a large body fights against each other in a war. It's not like when your class can't decide whether to have pepperoni or cheese for your pizza party.
