Martinez is a Spanish last name, and means "son of Martin."

Back in the Middle Ages, people in Spain started to differenciate individuals with the same first names but from different families, adding "ez" to the end of the first name of the father of that individual.

For example, Hernadez, means son of Hernan; Marquez means son of Marc or Marco; Sanchez means son of Sancho; Gonzalez is the son of Gonzalo, and so forth.
